Straum Jan Mayen Steel

Straum Jan Mayen Steel

Emerging from independent watchmaker Straum, a brand founded by two Norwegian industrial designers with a passion for the outdoors, the Jan Mayen Steel collection is a tribute to adventure and nature alike. Created to celebrate the expedition undertaken by Straum’s founders to reach the Beerenberg stratovolcano, a 7,470 ft mountain located on the northeastern end of the Norwegian island of Jan Mayen, the series offers watches with striking dials that echo the organic textures and natural forms found on the island.

Straum Jan Mayen Steel

When nature shapes the dial

Within the Straum Jan Mayen Steel collection, nature-inspired dials take centre stage. Take the Green Moss model, which captures attention instantly with its deep, lacquered allure, featuring blade-like indices with Grade A Super-LumiNova applied. The radial pattern features deep green tones that shift from lighter to darker, forming a fumé effect. The hue echoes the hardy moss that spreads across Jan Mayen, softening the island’s alien landscape, beneath a rich, carpet-like layer of green. Created using successive stamping stages, the dial is then refined through a series of treatments and precisely applied paint layers.

The Jan Mayen collection is shaped by the vivid imagery that left the strongest impression on Straum’s founders during their expedition, a vision that’s unmistakably reflected in the stainless steel models. Each piece features a 39mm case with an 11.3mm profile (including the box sapphire crystal) that’s complemented by a steel bracelet with an integrated design. For added versatility, it can be effortlessly swapped for an integrated-style FMK rubber strap via the proprietary Straum Coupling system.

Sculpted by the elements

The Straum Jan Mayen Glacier White presents another striking interpretation of Straum’s nature-inspired design, channelling the windswept surface of Beerenberg’s frozen slopes. The dial’s sharp ridges and vertical textures mirror a glacier shaped by unyielding blizzards, bringing icy terrain to life on the wrist. Meanwhile, its counterpart, the Black Sand model, takes cues from Jan Mayen’s black volcanic beaches.

Nordic form, Swiss mechanics

Beneath the surface, the Jan Mayen Steel is driven by a Swiss-made La Joux-Perret G101 movement, in Soigné grade and adjusted across four positions for dependable accuracy. Offering a 68-hour power reserve, the movement, complete with a Straum custom rotor, is showcased through a sapphire caseback. Beyond the wrist itself, the Straum experience continues with the Capsule, a futuristic monobloc aluminium watch box designed to contain and shield the timepiece, while making a bold, minimalist statement.
