Straum Jan Mayen Basalt

Dialing into the earth

The Jan Mayen Basalt dials are nothing short of extraordinary. Born from an ambitious collaboration between experts from Norway, Scotland, Switzerland, and China, these dials are crafted from real volcanic rock sourced directly from Jan Mayen. Cut into ultra-thin layers, the basalt retains its natural cavities that reveal the lumed base beneath, producing a molten-like effect. Available in three striking variations and released in limited quantities, each piece feels as rare as the landscape that inspired it.

For Straum’s nature-loving founders, inspiration struck far from the ordinary. A trip to Jan Mayen, one of Norway’s most remote islands, sparked the idea for a watch collection unlike any other. Dominated by Beerenberg, the world’s northernmost active volcano, the island is scattered with rugged basalt rock, formed as molten lava cools and traps pockets of gas while solidifying. This striking natural texture has made its way into the Jan Mayen models, which are housed in a balanced 38.7mm stainless steel case with an 11.5mm profile.

Straum Jan Mayen Basalt HIGHLIGHTS

Substance behind the stone

Powering the Jan Mayen Basalt models is the same trusted engine found across the Jan Mayen collection: the Swiss-made La Joux-Perret with 27 jewels and an impressive 68-hour power reserve. Rated as Soigné grade and carefully adjusted to four positions, it offers dependable precision. A sapphire caseback completes the experience, offering a glimpse of the movement’s intricate workings, complete with an engraved rotor.

Always ready for more

Completing the Jan Mayen Basalt is a beautifully executed integrated-style stainless steel bracelet, measuring 24.8mm at the lugs and tapering elegantly to 18mm at the clasps. Its refined finishing and push-button butterfly closure enhance both comfort and visual flow. Backed by 100m of water resistance, the Basalt is as capable as it is compelling.
